The Hyundai i20 is available in three categories; classic, comfort and style. With either a 1.2-1.4 litre petrol or a 1.4-CRDi diesel engine. The 1.2-litre version is cheap on tax, Band C (£30 a year from April 2011) and free in the first year. Be careful if choosing the 1.4-litre petrol, especially with the automatic gearbox, as car tax rises substantially and fuel economy with the automatic is noticeably lower. The 1.4 Crdi 75PS 5 speed diesel model falls into Car Tax B which also is free in the first year and £20 thereafter.

The diesel engine offers great fuel economy but doesn’t quite feel right in this car.

Once you factor in the purchase price and the long warranty, the i20 presents a very practical option in this sector. There is good, though not outstanding room in back for two adults. The boot offers good space. Standard equipment levels are excellent and the i20 is actually very good on the road.

The Hyundai i20’s handling is good but not excellent. It lacks the fluidity, crispness and sophistication of some of its more adept European rivals. Some drivers will find the chassis stiff while others may enjoy the hard-sprung feel. Still, the car’s light controls, ESP and good grip levels mean handling is better than average.
